‘We Are Lady Parts’: When Fierce, Queer and Muslim Women Play Punk Rock
‘We Are Lady Parts’ is a UK TV show that follows the story of a punk rock band, ‘We Are Lady Parts’, entirely composed of Muslim women. Defying stereotypes from the very first scene, the sitcom gives us five fantastic women who are not afraid to be themselves.
While Amina, a young woman studying to get her PhD in microbiology and secretly playing the guitar is seeking a husband, the eponymous “We Are Lady Parts” is seeking a guitarist. A match made in heaven? Definitely not at first. After all, how could any self respecting riot girrrl band accept a Don Mclean enthusiast?
As Amina leaves the hopes of finding a husband behind, she encounters lead singer Saira, bassist Bisma, drummer Ayesha, and manager Momtaz. All four women have very rich lives that we get to explore throughout the season. Together, they form a chosen family, protecting each other from bi-phobia, disappointment, and even just expectations.
Check out the trailer below for a sneak peek at these fantastic ladies’ antics! Spoiler alert: the show features one ICONIC cover of Queen.
