‘Pauline’, Céline Sciamma’s (queer) debut
Did you like Portrait of a Lady on Fire? Then boy oh boy, do we have a treat for you… Almost a decade before making the iconic piece of queer cinema that is ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’, director Céline Sciamma and actress Adèle Haenel worked together on another lesbian movie.
‘Pauline’ is a French short film that was commissioned for the campaign ‘Five Films Against Homophobia’ in 2010.
‘Pauline’ essentially is the confession of a small town girl, growing up in the stifling atmosphere of the French countryside. Her life is a story of love, betrayal, loneliness and, eventually, happiness. Besides Adèle Haenel, it stars the lovely Anaïs Demoustier, who has also appeared in queer roles since then.
‘Pauline’ is available on Youtube with English subtitles and you can watch it just below!
