The Cult Teen Comedy Movie On Coming Out You Need to (Re)Watch

Ahhh, ‘But I’m a cheerleader’, the movie that brought our queer youths through thick and thin, through the shade of the closet and the white hot light of coming out.

This 1999 satirical comedy directed by Jamie Babbit tells the story of a young girl sent to a conversion therapy to ‘cure’ her of her sexual orientation. Because, you see Megan is a (drumrolls) lesbian. Oh no!

Her lesbianism is something that her family started to suspect, as she is not that interested in kissing her boyfriend and too interested in admiring her fellow cheerleaders. That, and her interest in vegetarianism. So, you have been warned: if you take an interest in vegetarianism, you might be... (whispers) a lesbian.

More seriously, the movie is one of the first in the genre and a must watch. If you have not seen it yet, you should definitely watch it. It will be worth your time, scout’s honor (we have never been in scouts actually, but we promise you it is a great movie anyway). We have included the trailer down below just for you (director's cut)!

Dive into it to discover a place where people can come out in their own preferred ways. Such ways range from the calm acceptance of “I like girls, a lot”, to shouting “I’m a homosexual” over and over - hey, to each their own.

Ultimately this movie can only be described as a fairytale, and a very visual one: the backgrounds and character’s outfits are super colorful and evolve with the story, to match its development. It is a story of hope and unbridled romance, and it could not have captured the feelings of coming out any better.

So today of all days, in honor of coming out day, give it a (re-)watch. You can thank us later!
