‘Disclosure’: A Vital Documentary On The Realities Of Trans People

‘Disclosure’ uses historical footage to break down harmful stereotypes and the negative effects they have on trans lives.

‘Disclosure’, directed by Sam Feder, is a thorough and eye-opening analysis of transgender representation in media. Featuring trans talents such as Laverne Cox, MJ Rodriguez and Chaz Bono, the film takes a deep dive into Hollywood cinema, an industry that reflects and perpetuates our deepest anxieties about gender.

The documentary draws attention to the fact that 80% of people in America do not know any trans person personally. This means that, for the majority of people, all they know about trans folks is what is conveyed to them by the media. And let us be honest, mainstream media do not present trans people in a positive or accurate light.

More often than not, movies use trans people as a joke trope and they are played by cis actors and actresses. And, on top of that, these representations are extremely sparse. It is urgent that we change that. We need more representations of trans realities and we need to hire more trans people in film writing, directing and acting.

If we have not convinced you yet of the necessity to watch this Netflix documentary, have a look at the trailer down below. It is worth it, pinky swear!
