The Legendary La Veneno Is Back: Watch The TV Series Now

Look, if you speak Spanish, you must have heard about her. She is only the trans and LGBTQIA+ icon of generations of Spanish speakers. Yes, we are talking about the one and only Cristina Ortiz Rodríguez.

Born in the small town of Adra, Spain, in 1964, Cristina noticed early on that she was different from the other children. She actually suffered abuse and rejections from her family and the other villagers, who felt uneasy with her gender identity. She left home at 13 only to go live with one of her sisters.

In 1991, she participated in a TV show that would change the course of her life. Indeed, the prize was a trip to Bangkok. There, Cristina met amazing, gorgeous and brilliant trans women. This would lead to her to start to transition upon her return to Spain.

Sadly, Cristina finding who she was and starting to become a little more herself lead to her being fired from the hospital she worked at. She then turned to sex work to earn a living. And in 1996, a TV crew came to get footage of sex workers with the goal to make fun of them - yes apparently you could do that on TV back then. But with Cristina, the TV crew found someone to speak to. And she quickly gained the public’s support, openly coming out as a trans woman and a sex worker on TV and talking about the abuse other people inflicted on her because of it. What a queen!

This opened a new road for Cristina with regular TV appearances, music hits and popularity. But after leaving the dream for sometime, she was sentenced to 3 years in jail for insurance fraud. She never really recovered from it, suffering from eating disorders, depression and anxiety. She died in 2016 in her flat, in mysterious circumstances.

In 2020, Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo created a miniseries called ‘La Veneno’, based on Cristina’s autobiography. It follows the story of a young journalism student, Valeria Vegas, who wants to hear her idol’s story for a university project. As the two women meet and Cristina tells her life story, a strong connection seems to form between them…

The series pays a beautiful and touching tribute to La Veneno, her life and her death. And have we mentioned that trans women characters are played by trans actresses? Okay, we will stop obsessing on the series and just leave you with the trailer now. Watch it now and thank us later!
