‘Tengo Miedo Torero’: A Story of Revolution, Hope, Love And Queerness

If you love revolutions, queerness and love, this one might be just the one for you. ‘Tengo Miedo Torero’ (2020), directed by Rodrigo Sepúlveda tells the story of the ageing ‘la Loca del Frente’ and Carlos, a young activist and member of the revolutionary front.

Based on the eponymous book of Pedro Lemebel, the story takes place during Pinochet’s dictatorship in the 1980s. La Locas leads a life of partying with queer friends, until, one day, per chance, her path crosses Carlos’. La Loca starts to fall in love with him and, out of love or of convictions, perhaps, agrees to help him as he plans to kill Pinochet. This will lead La Loca to play an ever growing role in the coming revolution.

The movie follows the evolution of the relationship between the two main characters, while asking questions about revolution and queerness. ‘If there’s ever a revolution that includes us, let me know. I’ll be here, front row’, says La Loca. And, honestly, this one hit home. Queer people have alway had to fight for themselves and create their own space, because no one else fought for us or tried to include us in social movements - the never ending ‘yes, we will take about your situation later’...
