Our Netflix Pick of the Week: ‘Your Name Engraved Herein’

This high school love story was a huge success in Taiwan, the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. The movie takes us back to the 1980s, in the post-martial law era, when Taiwan was still grappling with authoritarianism. Two boys, A-Han and Birdy,  find themselves falling for each other in the midst of social stigma and family pressure. ⁠

What we love about this movie is the fact that director Patrick Kuang-Hui Liu consciously avoided making a yaoi (boys’ love) movie. For those of you who are not familiar with the genre, yaoi refers to homoerotic fictions, specifically created by and catering to heterosexuals - and usually, produced by straight women. Praised for the depicition of gay sensuality, ‘Your Name Engraved Herein’ is not tainted by the hetero media gaze.
