Our Netflix Pick of the Week: ‘Your Name Engraved Herein’
This high school love story was a huge success in Taiwan, the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. The movie takes us back to the 1980s, in the post-martial law era, when Taiwan was still grappling with authoritarianism. Two boys, A-Han and Birdy, find themselves falling for each other in the midst of social stigma and family pressure.
What we love about this movie is the fact that director Patrick Kuang-Hui Liu consciously avoided making a yaoi (boys’ love) movie. For those of you who are not familiar with the genre, yaoi refers to homoerotic fictions, specifically created by and catering to heterosexuals - and usually, produced by straight women. Praised for the depicition of gay sensuality, ‘Your Name Engraved Herein’ is not tainted by the hetero media gaze.
If you love angst and drama, this movie his made for you! You can check the trailer down below.
