‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’: The Evangelist Who Preached About Gay Rights
We, at BØWIE Creators, being nothing if not on the forefront of trends would like to bring you a recommendation in line with the times. Sure, we could recommend Spiderman no way home, but alas, the elusive queer Spider-Man does not make an appearance in that.
But, lo and behold, we do have a film where queerness and Andrew Garfield intersect to make an unlikely appearance: ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ (2021) ! Directed by Michael Showalter, the movie is about the eponymous televangelist, played by the amazing Jessica Chastain, and her time in front of the cameras. A televangelist who preached about gay rights in the thick of the AIDS crisis, of course we had to recommend this movie!
You may know Tammy Faye as the lady on the TV with fabulous makeup and even more bombastic singing about Jesus. Yet, the movie offers us a much closer look at her struggles behind the scenes: her infinite gift for embracing people from all walks of life, her support of the gay community during the AIDS crisis, and the price she had to pay for standing up to the religious leaders who shunned them.
Find out how Tammy Faye went from an over the top televangelist, to a ridiculed figure, and finally a drag and gay icon in ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’.
