Kiran Gandhi is the Bold, Fierce and Activist Singer We Were Waiting For
The young LA-based musician effortlessly combines art and activism in her music. Indeed, she sings about female empowerment. She started as a drummer for M.I.A., and released her debut album ‘Voices’ in 2016.
Our absolute favorite song of hers is ‘Waiting for me’, in which she drops some pearls of wisdom: ‘We always assume our own powerlessness but never our own power’. In the video clip, she proudly displays her Indian roots, dancing next to a diverse group of people, including queer, trans and gender-nonconforming artists.
As a queer woman of color, Madame Gandhi does not want to be defined by victimhood and struggle. If you want to get to know her a bit more, we suggest checking out her Ted Talk: ‘Why we must stop dancing to the sound of our own oppression!’. You can watch it down below!
