Follow The Night with techno-pop princess Sam Quealy
An overexposed closeup of a glammed-up face. An eyeshadow accentuating the absence of pupils. Blonde micro bangs and glossy lips. A shiny red font letting people know her name. No doubt, the cover of Blonde Venus, Sam Quealy's first album, lives up to its name. After a couple of singles with other covers looking straight out of high fashion magazines and one EP, NIGHTSHADE, Sam Quealy has conquered our DJ set lists and our hearts with an album encapsulating the greatness, campness, and madness of her talent.
But what she describes as “fun hard techno-pop to just dance, be silly, and have fun” reveals to be way more layered. Songs such as Follow The Night, if still catchy, touch upon harder topics, like losing yourself in partying, extending the nights so much that there are no more days: “I really lived that for a long time. I was so lost, always in the club, outside every night, partying all the time. I think it’s fine, it’s part of discovering who you are and what you like. I have no regrets about my years in nightlife but I’m also happy to be more focused now. I can’t party all the time while also being on tour”.
Ballroom legend of the Comme des Garçons house, walking in the Face and Sex Siren categories - while waiting for a “Pussy” category to be created - Sam Quealy sure knows how to work an audience. If she admits to being a huge control freak, saying herself “I’m the manager, the stylist, the choreographer, the dance mom, the everything!” because she has a strong vision and wants it to be exactly as she envisions it, Sam Quealy’s goal is for people to loosen up: “For me, the best part about being a musician is getting to do the lives and just go fucking crazy with people. During live shows, I just hope that people lose their inhibition and escape reality”.
Sam Quealy is still touring until the end of 2024, so you still might get the chance to witness her insane stage energy. But although on the road, she’s already thinking about what’s next. “I already got the next stuff ready, it’s gonna be more disco and coldwave, Italo disco, more 80s, still my style but a little bit less techno”. Enough to keep us hooked for the future...
