Margaux Corda's Archives of Swiss Ballroom Scene
Initially intended for clinical use, Margaux’s father’s camera found itself in her hands, where she embarked on a journey of exploration and experimentation with the medium. "I experimented with it, tried out different settings, and fell in love with the process ». Her passion for visual arts eventually led her to pursue formal education in photography at ECAL (École cantonale d'art de Lausanne), a renowned institution for arts.
It was during her time at ECAL that Margaux's signature style began to take shape. Focused on the interplay of light and subject, her work exudes a unique blend of elegance and introspection. "I discovered a certain play of light that resonated with me ». This distinctive aesthetic, characterized by its polished yet thought-provoking imagery, has become synonymous with her name.
Margaux's current focus lies in documenting Switzerland's ballroom scene, a vibrant scene that she believes is essential to archive. Motivated by a desire to capture the energy and evolution of this community, she sees her work as more than just photography; it's a mission of preservation. "I've made it my mission to document and contribute to Swiss archives, especially within the LGBTQ+ community ».
Gaining acceptance within the ballroom community wasn't instantaneous for Margaux. It took time to build trust and rapport with her subjects, many of whom were understandably wary of exploitation. "There's always a level of distrust when it comes to capturing images," she acknowledges. However, through genuine engagement and a shared passion for storytelling, Margaux has earned the respect and collaboration of her peers.
Through her lens, Margaux not only captures moments but also traces the personal journeys of her subjects. From self-expression to physical transformation, her photographs serve as mirrors of growth and evolution within the ballroom community. "It's in the eyes; it's in the movements". Each image is a testament to the resilience and authenticity of those she documents.
As Margaux continues her quest to document the ballroom scene, she envisions compiling her work into tangible forms, such as books, to ensure its enduring legacy. With each click of her camera, she adds another chapter to the visual narrative of Switzerland's vibrant LGBTQ+ community. Through her lens, she not only captures moments but also preserves memories, celebrates diversity, and amplifies voices that deserve to be heard.
